> There are two different things people mean by "remove this server", and only one of them stops the bill.

This article is for anyone who wants to get rid of a server in InfraNest — whether that means shutting it down for good, or just tidying up your list.

## Overview

Every server in InfraNest also exists at your provider, such as Hetzner, TransIP or OVHcloud. So there are really two separate questions: do you still want the **machine**, and do you still want to **see it here**?

- **Delete server** — the machine is removed at your provider and you stop paying for it. This cannot be undone from InfraNest.
- **Stop tracking** — the machine keeps running and your provider keeps billing you for it. It just disappears from InfraNest, and you can bring it back any time.

If you want to stop paying, use **Delete server**. If someone else looks after that machine, or you just don't want it cluttering your list, use **Stop tracking**.

> [!NOTE]
> A server you added by hand is the exception. Since there's no provider account behind it, deleting it only removes its record here — there's no machine to switch off and no bill to stop.

## Delete a server

1. Open the server, then go to the **Power** tab.
2. Select **Delete server**.
3. Type the server's name in the field marked **Type {name} to confirm:**.
4. If your organisation requires it, confirm again with your passkey, authentication code or password.
5. Read the confirmation box carefully — it tells you whether the machine is removed right away or at the end of your already-paid period.

> [!WARNING]
> Deleting a server cannot be undone from InfraNest. At some providers this happens immediately; at others it's a cancellation that takes effect at the end of your paid period.

## Stop tracking a server

1. Open the server and go to the **Power** tab, or use the ⋯ menu next to the server in your server list.
2. Select **Stop tracking**.

No confirmation code is needed here, because nothing happens to the actual machine — it keeps running and your provider keeps billing for it as normal.

## Delete a server you added by hand

1. Go to **Servers** (under **Monitoring**).
2. Use the ⋯ menu on the server's row, or open the server and use the ⋯ menu at the top.
3. Confirm the deletion.

You can also do this from the **Power** tab of the server page, where you'll type the server's name to confirm, just like any other delete.

## Track a server again

1. Go to **Servers**.
2. Click the **Not tracked** button above the list.
3. Select **Track again** on the row for the server you want back.

Its history, tags, custom fields and settings all come back with it.

## Tips

- Both deleting and untracking a server are recorded in your **Audit Log**, along with who did it and when.

## Troubleshooting

**The Delete server button is disabled.** The server likely has delete protection switched on, either from you or your provider. Turn it off before you can delete. **Stop tracking** still works, since it doesn't touch the machine itself.

**My provider doesn't offer a Delete option here.** Some providers can't delete a server directly from InfraNest. For example, an OVHcloud VPS is a subscription with a notice period rather than something that switches off instantly, so there's no **Delete server** button for it. Cancel the VPS in the OVHcloud panel instead, then use **Stop tracking** here.

**I deleted a server but it's still showing up.** At some providers, "delete" really means "cancel." TransIP, for example, ends a VPS at the end of the period you've already paid for — not the day you ask. The server keeps running and stays in your list until your provider actually removes it, at which point it disappears from InfraNest by itself. This is expected behaviour, not an error. InfraNest can't cancel this for you faster — use your provider's own control panel if you need to.

**I stopped tracking a server, but I'm still being billed.** That's expected. Untracking only removes the server from InfraNest's view — monitoring and alerts stop, but nothing reaches your provider, so your invoice doesn't change. Check the **Not tracked** view any time to see what you've left behind.

**Deleting a server didn't remove everything I expected.** Volumes, IP addresses, snapshots and backups are billed separately by your provider, and deleting the server doesn't necessarily delete them too. Check those lists afterwards if you want everything gone.
