# Renew a domain

Renew a domain before it expires, or set it to renew automatically so it never lapses — for anyone managing domains in InfraNest.

## Overview
- Renew a domain for one or more years at any time.
- Turn on **Auto-renew** so the registrar handles it automatically at expiry.
- InfraNest checks with the registrar in advance where possible, so you know the price and whether the renewal will succeed before anything is charged.

## Renew a domain now
1. Open the domain from your **Domains** list.
2. In **Quick Actions**, choose **Renew**.
3. Pick how many years to renew for, then select **Confirm renewal**. The renewal is sent to the registrar, and the new expiry date appears once it's done.

Where the registrar can tell us in advance, InfraNest checks the renewal with it first — the price and whether your account can still pay. If the registrar says no, you'll see its reason straight away and nothing is charged or queued.

## Turn on auto-renew
1. Open the domain's page.
2. Find **Auto-renew** and switch it **On**.

> [!NOTE]
> Some registrars can only turn auto-renew **Off** through their systems, not back **On**. In that case, InfraNest will tell you to re-enable it in the registrar's own control panel instead of showing a button that would fail.

## Cancel a domain (stop paying for it)
There is no "cancel" button, because cancelling isn't something InfraNest can do on your behalf — a domain ends when nobody renews it.

1. Open the domain's page.
2. Switch **Auto-renew** to **Off**.
3. Let the domain reach its expiry date — the registrar stops billing you at that point.

If you'd rather move the name to another provider instead of letting it lapse, transfer it away.

Once a domain is over, you can archive it (see **Archive domain**) to tidy it out of your list. Archiving alone cancels nothing — it only changes what InfraNest shows you.

## Expiry reminders
InfraNest tracks every domain's expiry date and marks domains as **Expiring soon** or with **expires in {n} days** / **expired {when}** status. You're reminded through your alert destinations (email, Slack, Telegram and more) under **Alerts**, so nothing slips through.

> If you're not sure whether a registrar supports re-enabling auto-renew automatically, check the domain's page first — InfraNest will point you to **the registrar**'s control panel if a direct switch isn't possible.
