Anycast DNS

Anycast DNS is a routing technique where multiple servers share the same IP address, automatically directing queries to the geographically or topologically nearest server.

Anycast DNS routes incoming DNS queries to the closest or best-performing server in a network of servers all advertising the same IP address. Rather than returning the same IP for all users, anycast uses network routing (BGP) to steer each request toward whichever server can serve it most efficiently—typically the geographically nearest or lowest-latency one.

When you query an anycast IP, your local router forwards the packet along the path of least cost (in BGP terms). Because multiple servers announce the same address from different locations, the network naturally distributes traffic. This contrasts with unicast DNS, where a single nameserver IP serves all users, or load balancing, which requires a central entry point.

How it works:

  • Multiple authoritative DNS servers in different regions each announce the same IP address (e.g., 8.8.8.8).
  • Your local resolver sends a query to that address.
  • BGP routing directs your packet to the nearest server.
  • You receive the DNS response from whichever server answered.

Real-world use:

Public DNS services like Google Public DNS (8.8.8.8) and Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) use anycast to serve queries from a global network of datacenters. A user in London and another in Tokyo both query the same IP but connect to different physical servers, reducing latency and improving resilience.

TipAnycast requires BGP support at your network level; it's mainly deployed by large DNS providers and CDNs. Most small domain owners use their registrar's or DNS provider's ordinary unicast nameservers instead.

Anycast improves performance and fault tolerance: if one server fails, traffic automatically reroutes to the next-closest replica.
