DNS templates

DNS templates let you save a set of DNS records and apply them to any zone in one go — great for standard setups like an email provider's records or your own baseline for every new domain. This article is for anyone who manages DNS in InfraNest.

Overview

• A template is a reusable group of records (for example, an email provider's MX, SPF, DKIM and DMARC records).
• Apply a template to a zone instead of adding each record by hand.
• Use built-in templates or create your own from an existing zone.

Use a template

1. Open a zone from the DNS page.
2. Choose Apply a template, pick one, and use Preview changes to see exactly which records it will add before you commit.

3. Select Apply template. The records are added to the zone (and pushed to the provider where supported).

NoteIf your DNS provider refuses one of the records — because of a rate limit, an expired key, or a record type it doesn't accept — InfraNest stops there and tells you how many records were added and how many were not, along with the provider's reason. The ones it couldn't add are not kept, so InfraNest never shows a record as live when nothing actually changed at your provider.

TipFix whatever the message describes, then apply the template again. Records that were already added are skipped automatically, so it's safe to re-run.

Make your own template

1. Open the zone whose records you want to reuse.
2. Choose Save zone as template to turn its existing, working records into a new template. This is the quickest way to capture a setup you already have.
3. Give it a Template name and save.
4. To make changes later, go to DNS Templates and use Manage to create, edit or delete your own templates (name, description, records). Built-in templates are read-only and can't be edited or deleted.

Tips

• Templates work well for an email provider's MX/SPF/DKIM/DMARC set, a SaaS tool's verification records, or your organisation's standard records for every new domain.
• You can also apply a template while creating a zone — look for Apply a template on the Add a DNS zone screen.
