Restore something you deleted

Deleted something by mistake? You have 14 days to put it back yourself — no support ticket, no administrator.

Accidentally deleted a monitor, automation, dashboard, or something else? This article shows anyone on your team how to bring it back within the recovery window.

Overview

  • You have 14 days to restore something you deleted yourself — no need to contact an administrator or open a support ticket.
  • This covers monitors, automations, dashboards, alert destinations, maintenance windows, saved templates (automation, DNS and firewall), tags, roles, custom fields and status pages.
  • After 14 days, the item is permanently removed and can't be recovered.

Restore right after deleting

  1. Delete the item as usual.
  2. Watch for the message that appears in the corner of the screen with an Undo button.
  3. Click Undo and the item comes straight back, exactly as it was.

NoteThe message disappears after about ten seconds, but that isn't your only chance — you can still restore the item later.

Restore later from where it lived

  1. Go to the page the item lived on.
  2. Look near the bottom of the page for Recently deleted:
    • Monitors — the Monitoring page, under the list of monitors.
    • Automations — the Automations page, under the list of rules.
    • Alert destinations — the Alerts page.
    • Maintenance windows — the Maintenance page.
    • Templates — under the list they belong to: automation templates in the template gallery, DNS templates and firewall templates on their own pages.
    • Status pages — the Status pages page.
    • Tags, roles and custom fields — in Settings → Recycle bin, next to their own settings tabs.
    • Dashboards — open the dashboard menu (the arrow next to the dashboard's name) and choose Recently deleted.
  3. If Recently deleted doesn't appear, nothing of that kind has been deleted recently.

Restore from the Recycle bin

  1. If you can't remember where the item lived, go to Settings → Recycle bin.
  2. Browse the list — it shows everything your team deleted in the last 14 days, whatever kind it is, in one place. Each entry shows who deleted it, when, and how many days are left.
Restore something you deleted
  1. Click Restore on the item you want back.
  2. Confirm — it returns with everything it had. A monitor keeps its history and settings, an automation keeps its steps, and a dashboard keeps its widgets and layout.

Good to know

  • Nothing runs while it's deleted. A deleted monitor doesn't check anything or send alerts, a deleted automation doesn't fire, and a deleted alert destination receives nothing. A deleted maintenance window stops holding alerts back, so alerts it was suppressing start coming through again. Restoring puts all of that back.
  • After 14 days it's gone for good. Once the countdown runs out, the item is permanently removed and cannot be recovered.
  • A restored dashboard won't take over as your default. If you set another dashboard as your default in the meantime, that one stays your default.
  • Plan limits still apply. If you've reached your plan's limit for monitors or automations since deleting one, you'll need to remove or upgrade before you can restore it.
  • A name that's been taken blocks the restore. Delete a tag called "prod" and make a new one with the same name, and the old one can't come back — the name is in use. Rename the new one first, then restore. The same goes for roles, custom fields, and a status page's web address.
  • Roles in use can't be deleted at all. Move members to another role first — otherwise they'd lose access the moment the role went.
  • Dashboards are personal. You'll only see your own deleted dashboards, and only you can restore them.
  • Restoring a role needs permission to manage roles, because a role is what grants access.
  • Tags come back attached to everything they were on, and a restored custom field brings back every value anyone had entered.
  • Deleting a template doesn't undo its work. Zones and firewalls you already created from a template stay exactly as they are.
  • You need the same permission you'd need to delete it. If your role can't delete monitors, it can't restore them either.

Troubleshooting

Servers, domains, DNS zones and records, volumes and firewalls aren't in Recently deleted. Those live in your provider account (Hetzner, Cloudflare, TransIP and so on) — InfraNest just shows you what's there.

  • If one disappears from InfraNest but still exists at your provider, run a sync on that integration and it comes back.
  • If you deleted it at the provider, restore it there instead.

TipTo prevent accidents with servers or volumes, turn on Enable delete protection for the ones that matter.
